My tuition has been deeply impacted by the Covid-19 crisis. See the current situation here:
The 'Sea and Shore' photography workshop looks at coastal photography and the techniques we can use to produce effective compositions, from long-exposures to sand patterns, crashing waves to rusty groynes.
The Naze at Walton, Essex, is a stunning backdrop to the beaches with a wide variety of features to allow a range of images to be made, and this workshop runs from late afternoon to dusk, hopefully including a colourful sunset. It is preceded by a two hour online session with a slideshow and discussion, which is available to book seperately.
This is a more specialised workshop concentrating on coastal photography, from wider seascapes to details of beaches. You'll need to be happy with your ability to control your camera, either because you've attended my 'Know The Basics' workshop, or because you've already learnt the basics yourself. A tripod will be hugely beneficial for this sort of photography, especially as we'll be shooting into late evening.
We have a slideshow and discussion in advance via Zoom, looking at techniques and subjects available for sea and shore photography, from composition, lighting, subject matter, long exposures and more.
There are two of these sessions available, on Friday 26th June at 7.30pm, and Sunday 28th June at 3.30pm. They last around 2 hours, and are available to anyone, whether they are taking part in the practical session or not. Details of how to book are below.
For those attending the practical session too, we will head down to the beach to put these techniques into practice, with everyone getting some one-to-one time whilst we're there. We will have nearly 4 hours shooting time, running from late afternoon, through sunset, to dusk.
Payment in advance is required to secure your place. Use the form below to book and pay. Once you have booked a place, full joining instructions will be emailed to you within 48 hours. If you do not appear to receive a booking confirmation within that time, please check your spam or junk email folder first, then get in touch.
If you would like advanced warning of forthcoming workshops, subscribe to my Newsletter, and book up as soon as you get the chance!
I also offer private photography tuition, so that you can receive my undivided attention all year round.

Ideas and techniques for effective coastal photography, allowing participants to produce a range of images in a variety of styles.
The online slideshow will use a wide range of examples demonstrating how shutter speed, composition, lighting and weather will affect your images. The practical session incorporates 1-2-1 time with each participant to help them achieve the shots they're after.
This is an artistic and technical photography workshop, but the technical side refers more to the specifics of the location and techniques we'll be using, rather than how to use your camera. If you need help with that, book yourself in to a 'Know The Basics' workshop first.
An understanding of the controls of the camera is very useful, as we will be controlling depth-of-field, subject movement and more. However, the purely compositional aspects of the day can be achieved with little to no technical knowledge.
This 'Sea and Shore' photography workshops cost £60 per person, with a maximum of 5 participants.
If you can't make the practical session, but would still enjoy the online session, that can be booked for just £15.
The workshop runs for 6 hours in total, and includes a 2 hour online slideshow and discussion, followed a few days later by a practical outdoor session into the evening.
Everyone gets some 1-2-1 time in the evening, which can be used to address any aspect of your camera, photography, or anything else you wish to cover.
No. I have had customers as young as 10 on a standard workshop and have even run workshops for children's groups, with an age range of 7-11. The other end of the age spectrum is no hindrance either!
Children under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by a designated, appropriate adult; this may be a family member, nanny or chaperone. If the appropriate adult is not a workshop participant no extra charge will be incurred.

Yes there are, and even though it is mainly on the flat, the workshop isn't best suited to those in wheelchairs due to differing levels with only steps and no ramp access.
The area we will be using involves short flights of stairs from beach to sea wall, and we will only be walking approximately one mile, but there will consequently be a lot of standing around.
If you have any concerns, please contact me to discuss so that we can try to make things as straightforward as possible for you.
Send us your questions and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Another Great Workshop
"Daniel consistently provides a variety of interesting workshops each year which afford great photo opportunities along with educational instruction for all levels of photographic ability and always a great sense of fun for the participants." David Whyman via Trustpilot
Had a thoroughly enjoyable and informative workshop
"Had a thoroughly enjoyable and informative workshop at the Tate modern and on the banks of the Thames. Daniel was very knowledgeable and incredibly patient, taking time with each participant to teach us about settings, composition, lighting and how he approaches different shots. It was a most relaxing afternoon and I can't wait to try out what I've learned in other locations. Would thoroughly recommend and wish I lived nearer to do some of Daniel's other workshops!" Joanne via Trustpilot
Great guy, great communicator, great knowledge
"So - you’ve invested £100s (£1000s?) in a great camera - but so many buttons and settings!! Now invest a little in yourself and let Daniel show you how to get the best from your camera. You will have fun, you will learn and get to put into practice!" Tony Johnson via Trustpilot
A great intro session
"A great session with Daniel at Weald country park - wanted to learn how to use my camera more (a Panasonic LUMIX compact), and Daniel explained everything clearly, showing example pics and drawings to help. We then went out to put it in practice - which was great, and to put into practice straight away really helped." Lisa via Trustpilot
Excellent day spent at Hyde Hall
"Excellent day spent at Hyde Hall with Daniel, despite the weather. Daniel managed to teach the uninitiated how a camera works, what all the buttons do, then we managed to get out and put it all into practice. Thank you and yes I will do my homework!!" Brendan Robinson via Trustpilot
